Description
The body of Oriental Rat Snake (Ptyas mucosa) is dark or chestnut brown in colour and it has stripes on the last half of its body, including the tail. The head is distinct, and the large eye has a round pupil. The scales are smooth; the vertebrals may be slightly enlarged (Das, 2010). It is a good climber and feeds mainly on birds and mammals, such as rodents. Its fast movement that allows it to survive near human habitations. The genus name is derived from the Greek word, "ptyas" which means spitter. The species epithet is named after Latin “mucosus” which means slimy, which refers to the slimy body of the snake (The Reptiles Database, 2019).
