Description

One of the most charismatic birds, Heliopais personatus or often known as the Masked finfoot is an elongated duck-like bird. It has pallid grey-brown with a yellow to orange bill. When it breeds, it has inconspicuous bobble on its forehead. This species has dark brown and whitish stripes down the sides of neck, with black throat in males, and white in females. Meanwhile, the immature birds have pale crown (Davinson, 1995).

Heliopais personatus is typically seen swimming along dark, overhanging banks. It can be found individually or in small groups along forest-lined rivers, pools, and in mangroves. It occurs from east India to Indochina and Sumatra (Davinson, 1995).
