Description
Himantopus himantopus is a striking large black-and-white wader that belongs to the family Recurvirostridae. It has bright pink legs and a slender, black bill. It is also known as Black-winged stilt and Kedidi kaki panjang in Malay. The underparts and most of the head and neck are white. Both sexes have quite similar looks but can be differentiated by having a black back, often with greenish gloss or sheen for males. While the females have a brown hue back, contrasting with the black flight feather. This species can be found in wetlands with open shallow water as well as freshwater swamps and coastal mudflats (eBird, 2024; Davinson, 1995). It is usually feeds in deep water by wading and swimming in small groups apart from other waders. They mainly eat insects and crustaceans.
