This magnificent tern has a large size measuring about 53cm in length with a red bill. It is commonly known as Caspian Tern or Camar Kaspian in Malay (Akta Pemuliharaan Hidupan Liar, 2010). It is also known as a strong flier, where it follows the beach back and forth to search for food. When it spots a fish in the shallow water, it will plunges in with great force to grab it.
During the non-breeding season, the Caspian Tern has grey crown and mantle with white sides of neck and underparts. While during the breeding season, the entire crown of this species is black. In peninsular Malaysia, this species is an uncommon visitor which has sporadically turned up at Pulau Tengah and Kapar on the Selangor coast since 1990 (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993).
