Description

Icthyophaga ichthyaetus or more commonly known as Grey-headed Fish Eagle belongs to the family Accipitridae. Icthyophaga ichthyaetus is a large eagle with short broad wings and short rounded tail. It has a brownish breast and upper belly. The head is pale grey while the white belly and undertail coverts are white. The white tail has black terminal band and easily seen when perching or during flight. The juvenile shown pale brown head and breast, and you may see the breast is marked with whitish streaks. Meanwhile, the tail is brownish. This species occur from India through South-East Asia to the Greater Sundas, Sulawesi and the Philippines. Similar to Lesser Fish Eagle, it prefers forested waterways.

Previously, Grey-headed Fish Eagle is common in Malaysia, but now it is consider uncommon and declining in a moderately rapid rate. This is due to the deforestation, overfishing and pollution. Actions like survey, monitoring and awareness campaign involving local residents are needed to protect this species and the wetland habitats.
