The Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis), also called as Pucong Merah in Malay (Jamaludin et al., 2007) is a member of Ardeidae (Herons) family commonly found in freshwater habitats such as reservoirs, riverbanks and marshy fields (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). It is widely distributed from India, China, eastern Russia and Japan through South-East Asia where the northern population will migrate to South-East Asia during winter.
The male Yellow Bittern appears to have black crown and uppertail coverts, pale brown mantle including pale yellowish buff underparts and wing coverts. As for the female, it has a similar appearance as the male but with reddish-brown crown and lightly streaked brown on underparts. Meanwhile, the juvenile has bold brownish streaked on upperparts but paler underparts (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
