Description
Lanius schach is commonly known as Long-tailed Shrike. This species is a typical shrike and richly coloured with a long narrow dark tail. It can be found in rice fields, any open country areas including parks and canal margins, scrubs, grasslands, and mainly in the lowlands.
Both sexes of L. schach have similar plumage colour. It has a grey crown and back, broad black mask through its eyes, plain bright rufous back, and black wings with a small rounded white patch at the base of primaries. Its cheeks, throat and belly are all white, with tawny flanks, under tail coverts and rump (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). The juvenile species have a similar appearance but duller with some barring on flanks.
The Long-tailed Shrike is easy to spot when perched in open. Their eating habits are including insects, particularly locusts. Small birds and reptiles are also consumed as their diet.
