Measuring only 11 cm, Lonchura punctulata or commonly known as Scaly-breasted Munia or Pipit Pinang in Malay is a species of munia mainly found in an open country, ricefields, plantations, scrubs and gardens. This munia is known to widely distributed in India, China and discontinuously through South-East Asia, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, Philippines and Sulawesi (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012; Phillipps, 2014).
Adult Scaly-breasted Munia can be distinguished by rufous-brown colour on the head and underparts in contrast with brownish scales on breast and flanks with a white center of the belly. Meanwhile, the juvenile appears to have lack scales and brown upperparts with paler shade below. It can be differentiated from the immature Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla) and White-headed Munia (Lonchura maja) by the greyish-black bill (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
