Description
Measuring around 19 cm in length (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993), the Buff-rumped woodpecker has a short black bill with a prominent crest. This species generally has thin black barring on its yellow buffy head and a white rump. Its upperparts and underparts plumages are blackish with white barred. Males can be distinguished from females by the presence of a red malar stripe. Its diets mainly consist of small ants and insect larvae. In Peninsular Malaysia, this bird is a common resident of lowland rainforest up to 1,300 m above sea level (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
