Merops leschenaulti is considered as a small bee-eater measuring around 20 cm in length. It is known as chestnut-headed bee-eater due to its chestnut head, nape and upper back. It also has a bright yellow throat with black band below (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993) and a green tail. The iridescent pale blue rump can be seen during flight. For its juveniles, the crown, nape and upper back are green in colour. The distribution for chestnut-headed bee-eater ranges from India to southern China discontinuously through Southeast Asia to Java and Bali. The habitat for this species is the open country with scattered trees, beach scrubs, plantations and from lowlands to lower montane elevations. It hawks for insects in the air.
