Merops philippinus or Blue-tailed Bee-eater is a richly coloured, slender bird. It is also known as Beberek Ekor-biru in Malay and can be found in all open habitats, rural areas, mangroves, plantations, scrubs and secondary growth forest.
The Blue-tailed Bee-eater is predominantly covered by green colour. Its face has a narrow blue patch with a black eye stripe, and a yellow and brown throat. The beak is black while the tail is blue with two central tail feathers elongated into points.
Like other bee-eaters species, Blue-tailed Bee-eater mainly eats insects, especially bees, wasps and hornets, which are caught in the air by sorties from an open perch. The insects caught are beaten to kill and break the exoskeleton. This habit is seen in many other members of the Coraciiformes order (Jeyarajasingam, 2012).
