Description
Microhierax fringillarius, also known as the Black-thighed Falconet is one of the smallest birds of prey in the family Falconidae. It measures around 15 cm in length (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993) and can be distinguished from white-fronted falconet (M. latifrons) by having a black forehead instead of white and it also has narrow white stripe which is joined to narrow down-curving supercilium. The juveniles of black-thighed falconet have a rufous forehead, supercilium and cheek patch with pointed wings. This species occurs in Myanmar and the Malay Peninsula to the Greater Sunda and can be found in forests, the forest edges with large trees, from lowlands up to lower montane elevations at 1500 m. Also, it is easily found in open areas near dead branches and wooded gardens. Its main diet is flying insects but may also attack small birds.
