Description
The Malayan Whistling-thrush (Myophonus robinsoni) is an endemic bird to the highlands of the Main range, central Peninsular Malaysia. It is very similar to the larger Blue Whistling-thrush but with a shorter neck and a deeper and more rotund body. The head shape is more rounded and proportionate, the bill is slender and less hooked. Also, Malayan Whistling-thrush’s eyes are proportionately larger than the Blue Whistling-thrush with an obvious yellowish tinge to narrow orbital ring. However, this character is quite hard to identify during poor light. To differentiate both thrushes, one should observe its habit or behaviour (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). Malayan Whistling-thrush’s head will usually be cocked with bill tilted upwards at about 45 degrees during foraging, which is not shown in Blue Whistling-thrush. This bird is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List due to small-scale habitat loss and degradation.
