Description
Leptocoma sperata is the smallest sunbird in the family Nectariniidae, measuring up to 10 cm in length. Despite its tiny size, it can flutter quickly and produce a high-pitched series of chirps and whistles. The male has blackish upperparts with a green cap and maroon belly while the female has a uniform dark olive body. The range of distribution for this sunbird encompasses India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines (HBW website, Strange, 2000). It is quite common to find this sunbird in Malaysia at low elevations and hills up to 1,217 m in Gunung Jerai, Kedah. It can be found in wooded areas, forest edges, mangroves, plantation areas and mature gardens. This sunbird mainly feeds on flowers, tiny fruits and insects.
