Description
Numenius phaeopus (Whimbrel or Kedidi pisau raut in Malay) is large brown wader belonging to the family Scolopacidae. It is more elegant and commoner than the species from the same genus N. arquata (Eurasian Curlew), which is widespread on mangrove coasts.
Numenius phaeopus has dark brown plumages, with downcurved bill and strong blackish and buff stripes on crown. In flight, it has a pale off-white rump, which is smaller than the Eurasian Curlew. Also, the wings are plain above and pale below, with heavy dark barring. This species can be found on all muddy coasts, swamps and also mangroves. It occurs almost worldwide (Davinson, 1995).
