Description
Another bright coloured woodpecker, Picus puniceus is a medium size woodpecker measuring about 25 cm in length. This bird is commonly known as Crimson-winged Woodpecker. It can be found in lowland forest, secondary vegetation and plantations. Its diet is mainly insects and larvae.
The Crimson-winged Woodpecker has dark olive green plumage above and below with plain maroon-red wings, red crown and crest with yellow tips, black tail, yellow throat and pale greyish-blue eye ring which is also diagnostic for this bird. The sexes can be distinguished by the red sub-moustachial stripe appearing on the male.
