Description
Pitta megarhyncha is a mangrove pitta belonging to the Pittidae family. It can grow up to 20cm. It looks similar to the blue-winged Pitta but lacks the buff lateral coronal stripe. Besides, P. megarhyncha has a longer and heavier bill (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). Its breast is orange-rufous and the belly is duller in colour. The mangrove pitta can be found from Myammar through the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and the Riau Archipelago. This species is a mangrove specialist. Due to loss and degradation of mangroves, the populations are declining. During low tides, it will hop along the muddy mangrove floor to feed on crabs and other crustaceans. It will nest on the mounds of mud lobsters.
