Description
The chicken-sized bird, Porphyrio porphyria is secretive, generally quiet and always occur in small numbers. This species is commonly known as Purple Swamphen and Purple Gallinule. It can be found in freshwater swamps, streams and marshes but prefers areas covered with Water Hyacinth and lilies on which it can walk and feed (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993). Their diets include the soft shoots of reeds and small animals, such as frogs and snails. They use their long toes to grasp food when eating.
The Purple Swamphen is mainly dusky black above, with a broad dark blue collar, and dark blue to purple below. The bill and frontal shields are red while its legs are long, scaly and orange-red. This bird will flick its tail up and down when walking, revealing its white under tail. For such a bulky bird, the Purple Swamphen is an accomplished flier and will readily take to the air to escape danger. In flight, its long legs and elongated toes will trail behind or hang underneath their body. Besides flying, Purple Swamphens are also proficient swimmers but prefer to wander on the edges of the water, among reeds and on floating vegetation.
