Description

Prionochilus thoracicus is a small flowerpecker measuring up to 10 cm. Generally, it is known as scarlet-breasted flowerpecker. The male can be differentiated from other flowerpeckers by its black head and red patch on its black breast. The male also has olive green mantle together with black wings and tails. The female of this flowerpecker lack the black patterns and has a greyer head. The female has reddish or orange tinge on its breast and olive green upperparts with yellowish rump and upper tail coverts. This species can be found in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei and can survive in both primary and mature secondary forest. Commonly, it is a lowland rainforest bird and sometimes appears at elevation up to 1200 m. Due to the loss of lowland rainforest, there is a moderately rapid decline for this population, so it is considered Near Threatened by IUCN Red List. Scarlet-breasted flowerpecker feeds on flowers, fruiting shrubs, and insects.
