Description
The Fire-tufted Barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus) is a strikingly beautiful bird with a flashy "fire-tuft". This species belongs to the family Ramphastidae and is endemic to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand where it is found in the mountain forests, along forest edges and in mature second growth forests. This species primarily feeds on fruits, particularly figs, but will also eat some insects.
Both sexes of this species look alike. This moderately large bird is about 28 cm in length and adult birds are overall green in appearance and have a brownish-maroon nape, grey lores, white band on the forehead, green throat, and followed by a bright yellow band before a black band, appearing like a necklace that separates the nape and the upper breast. The bill is fawn coloured with a black vertical band and with tuft that is located at the base of the beak. In male, the colour of the upper tufts is fiery orange, whereas the female lacks the crimson on the crown but with a sooty coloration instead. The young birds of this species are generally duller.
