Pycnonotus brunneus or the Red-eyed Bulbul is one of three commonest brown bulbuls. This species occurs in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Singapore and Thailand where it can be found in lowland forests up to 900m, and secondary growth along the forest edges.
The Red-eyed Bulbul has an intermediate size between the olive winged bulbul (Pycnonotus plumosus) and other brown bulbuls. It can be distinguished by its red eyes that lack a striking yellow rim. Its body is dark brown above, has brownish throat and breast with little contrast, and also slightly paler abdomen and under tail-coverts.
