Description
Velvet-fronted Nuthatch (Sitta frontalis) is locally known as Pepatuk Dahi Hitam because it has a black patch on its forehead (Jeyarajasingam, 2012). Another diagnostic characteristic for this bird is the red bill. It has deep violet-blue upperparts, whitish throat and breast and vinous underparts. To differentiate the male from the female, the male has black eyebrows or supercilium, while the female doesn’t. The juvenile of this species appears to be similar to the adults but with a black bill (Robson 2008; Lim et al., 2020). This species is widespread and fairly common as resident in the Oriental region, which ranges from India through South-East Asia to the Malay Peninsula and the Greater Sundas. Its diet includes insects, larvae, nuts and seeds. It can rapidly move up and down tree trunks while foraging. Frequently, S. frontalis moves with other flocks of passerines to feed.
