Description
Stachyris maculata is known locally as Rimba Rembah Besar or Kekicau Pinggul Perang in Malay and Chestnut-rumped Babbler in English. It can grow up to 18 cm long and is relatively larger than the long-billed Stachyris babbler. Its upperparts are olive brown with rufous chestnut lower back and rump, its throat is blackish and its breast is white with black spots. It feeds on invertebrates including beetles and spiders. Stachyris maculata can be found in the Sundaic lowlands, from Peninsular Thailand, Malaysia to Kalimantan and Sumatra, Indonesia and Brunei. This species formerly occurred in Singapore but is now extinct regionally. The forest clearance across its range has made the population of this species decline and is listed in the category of Near Threatened as stated in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
