Description
The Red Turtle-dove, also known as Red Collared-dove or Tekukur Merah in Malay is a medium-sized bird measuring about 23 cm in length. This species possesses a short tail and plump appearance. Both sexes have a thin black collar on the hindneck, greyish bill and brownish grey legs. They also have a blackish tail with broad white tip separated by blackish central tail feathers that is visible during flight. The male Red Turtle-dove can be identified by the blue-grey head, red-wine (vinaceous) tinge plumage and blackish flight feathers. Meanwhile, the female can be differentiated from the male by the greyish-brown head and dull brown plumage (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
This pretty dove is widely distributed across India, Southern China, South-East Asia to east Philippines inhabiting scrub and open country. It is fairly tame and usually gathers in small to large groups foraging on the ground (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
