Brown Wood Owl (Strix leptogrammica), or known locally as Hantu Punggor, belongs to the family of Strigidae. The brown wood owl is a medium-large owl, which can grow up to 57 cm tall. The uniform dark brown colour constitutes the upperparts, while there is faint white spotting on the shoulders. For the underparts, it has buff colour with brown streaking. This species has brown or rufous facial disc, edged with white and without concentric barring and appear to possess a white neckband. It has dark brown eyes (irises) and both sexes are similar in appearance. Their main diet consists of small mammals, birds and reptiles.This species has an extremely large range but suspected to be in decline due to ongoing habitat destruction (IUCN, 2016). This species is listed as Least Concern in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
