Tachybaptus ruficollis is a species of bird that belongs to the family podicipedidae (Grebes). It is commonly known as the Little Grebe. It can be recognised by its small size, dark grey-brown above and off-white below. Its face and neck will develop a deep rich maroon during breeding, along with dark underpart and yellow skin at the bill's angle (Davison, 1995).
This small duck-shaped bird is an active diver, pursues aquatic bird underwater and can even fly after them when they break the surface. It feeds on insects, small fish, and other aquatic life. It can be found in old mining pools, swamps, and rarely on the coast (Davison, 1995).
