Description
Blyth's Paradise-flycatcher is a type of passerine bird that belongs to the family Monarchidae which can be previously observed in Malaysia. However, according to Avibase (2018), recent taxonomic reviews shows that this species is now split into Terpsiphone paradisi, Terpsiphone affinis and Terpsiphone incei, and therefore Terpsiphone paradisi is no longer considered as existing in Malaysia, while Tersiphone affinis is the species that exist in Malaysia.
Commonly known as Blyth's Paradise-flycatcher, the male and female of this species both have different plumage and form. The males have elongated central tail feathers which can grow up to 45 cm long (Phillipps, 2014) and have two types of morphology, which is black and rufous plumage in some population, and white plumage in another. In comparison, the females have a shorter tail with a rufous wing and a blue-black head. This bird feeds on insects below the dense primary forest.
This species has a large range of distribution and can be found in Bangladesh, Brunei, Indo-China and the Malay Peninsula. The northern population is migratory, while the population in the Maldives are considered vagrants (IUCN, 2017). The population of this species is considered stable around the globe and therefore, it has been listed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (LC).
