Description

The Japanese Sparrowhawk, also known as Asiatic Sparrowhawk is the smallest accipiter with measurement between 25-30 cm. This species can be differentiated from the Besra (Accipiter virgatus) by the indistinct mesial stripe and lack of dark streaks on upper breast. The male species can be identified by the rufous pale on belly and breast with indistinct whitish bars. Meanwhile, the female has dark grey-brown upperparts with thin dark brown bars on the white underparts (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).

This species breeds in eastern Russia, China and Japan and migrating through South-East Asia to the Greater and Lesser Sundas during winter. It is known to inhabit open country, scrubs, mangroves, forests and forest edge where it usually seen solitarily in the tree crowns. It can also be seen in flocks during peak migration (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
