Measuring around 24 cm in size, the Jungle Myna or locally called Tiong Sawah in Malay is a species of bird widely spread throughout Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand (BirdLife International, 2016). This species can be seen at low elevations in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia to Melaka (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). It is known to inhabit open country in rural areas, plantations, cultivated fields and mangrove edge.
Jungle Myna has similar characteristics to Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) and Javan Myna (Acridotheres javanicus) but can be differentiated by certain features. Jungle Myna has a short crest, darker grey-brown plumage, greyish underwing and lack of yellow orbital skin. Also, it has blue-black colour at the base mandible of the yellow bill, paler grey body plumage contrasts with a darker shade on the head and breast (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
