Alcedo euryzona or generally known as blue-banded kingfisher belong to the family of Alcedinidae. This species can grow up to 20 cm, which is larger than the blue-eared kingfisher. A. euryzona has blackish-blue upperparts with fine blue speckles on its wing coverts (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). This species also has rufous colour above ear spot and white colour below. Its throat is white and its black bill occasionally has reddish mandible. The male of this kingfisher has pale rufous flanks and scaly blue breast band on its white underparts. Whereas, the female has pale rufous underparts, blackish maxilla and relatively dull reddish mandible. Alcedo euryzona peninsulae occurs in Myanmar through the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, while A. e. euryzona occurs in Java only (Avibase, 2018). However, the population is restricted to rivers in lowland forests. Forest conversion to agriculture, development and uncontrolled fire are the main threats for the blue-banded kingfisher.
