Description
Anous minutus or commonly known as the White-capped Noddy is a medium-sized seabird that measures around 36 cm in length (Phillipps, 2014). True to its name, this bird species has black plumage with a white cap that blends gradually with the dark plumage on its neck. It also has a black bill and reddish-brown to orange legs and feet. The males and females of this species are similar and the juveniles are slightly paler in colour and the white cap is clearly differentiated from its dark body plumage. The White-capped Noddy feeds on small fishes and squids, and also on crustaceans by flying low over the surface of the sea and picking them up. They usually forage within 10km of their breeding and roosting islands where they build their nests in trees near to their breeding colony (Gauger, 1999). This species ranges in tropical areas of Pacific and Atlantic Oceans with huge colonies nest on the islands of the Australian Great Barrier Reef (Phillipps, 2014).
