Description

Barbucca diabolica, commonly known as Susur Batu Kalimantan, is a member of the family Barbuccidae. The species epithet diabolica is derived from the Latin word diaboli meaning ‘of the devil’ alluding to the glowing red or yellowish orange colour of the eyes and the spiked tail of the species. It is widely distributed in Asia, and the type locality is Sungai Mandai, a tributary of the Kapuas River. It inhabits small, forested streams and backwaters. Its body has six broad, dark brown vertical bars that are separated by narrow, slightly oblique yellow or golden bars colour. It also has 4 pairs of barbels, 1 pair of rostral, 1 pair of mandibulary and 1 pair of labial. According to Roberts (1989), both males and females have tubercules on the caudal peduncle that extend above and in front of the anal fin. Both sexes can exhibit tuberculation on the gill covers, but only adult males have a patch of very small tubercules around the base and at the posterior of the eye, which Roberts (1989) describes as slightly concave or hook-shaped. Barbucca diabolica can grow up to 2.3 cm in length (Kottelat et al., 1993). Barbucca diabolica has been listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List (Lumbantobing, 2019).
