Description

Goniothalamus calcareus is a tree that can grow up to 4 m tall. The species epithet is derived from a Latin word, calcareus means “chalky”, and describes the location of this species where it was collected in the limestone vegetation. The dried twigs are pale brown or grey with irregular wrinkles along their length. It is also spotted to have lenticels and become more or less glabrous when dried. The shape of the leaves is varying from elliptic, oblong-elliptic, an elliptic-lanceolate to obovate. The blade size measures about 20–34 cm long and 4.5–9.0 cm wide. The leaves have (sub) coriaceous texture with the midrib on the above surface a little bit recessed and the bottom is prominent and rounded. The dried leaves will turn grey-green or grey-brown on the upper surface and brown on the bottom surface. This species produces a solitary flower that appears on axillary branches or the upper section of the main stem. The red outer flower petals possess ovate to ovate-lanceolate with petal sizes ranging from 15–26 mm long and 5–10 mm wide. The petals will turn dark brown or black when dried. On the other hand, the inner petals are coated with adpressed brown hairs and have an ovate shape. The size of the inner petals ranges from 8–16 mm long and 5–6 mm wide. This species produces more than 20 ellipsoidal monocarps. Each monocarp measures around 10 mm long and 7–8 mm wide. The ripe monocarps are red and will turn dark brown when dried. Each monocarp contains one smooth and brown seed with a size measuring about 10 mm long, 8 mm wide, and 6 mm thick. This species can be found in two states of Malaysia, where it has been recorded in the ultrabasic area in Sabah, and the limestone area in Sarawak (Turner et al., 2014).
