Description

Whipfin Mojarra has deep and compressed body; second dorsal-fin spine very long and filamentous, anal-fin spines generally robust, third longest; deeply forked and lobes pointed caudal fin and preopercle with 3 scale rows. Its body is brownish silver dorsally, brilliant silver ventrally, with vertical rows of indistinct dark ovoid spots laterally in adults and sub-aults; all fins tinged with tan and caudal fin with a blackish margin. It inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal areas to depths of at least 50 cm.
