Description

Notopterus notopterus, commonly referred to as "Bronze Featherback", "Asian Featherback," and "Belida Jawa", is a freshwater fish in the Notopteridae family. This species is indigenous to several regions in Southeast Asia, including India, Thailand, and Indonesia. This fish can be found in clear streams and brackish water (Talwar & Jhingran, 1991). It is carnivorous and known to feed on crustaceans, insects, and other fish (Ng, 2020). This fish has an elongated body with a dorsal fin shaped like a comb and bronze-like colouring. The fish body has a homogeneous silvery, greyish, or dark hue; meanwhile, pale or dirty white may appear for larger species. The size of the Asian Featherback is smaller than Chitala lopis, with an overall length is approximately 650 mm (Kottelat & Whitten, 1993). The maximum weight that this fish can reach is 315 g, according to Rahman (1989). The popularity of the Asian Featherback in the aquarium trade can be attributed to its compelling morphological and behavioural attributes. Nevertheless, Notopterus notopterus has been listed as Least Concern (Ng, 2020). Although this particular fish species is widely accessible in markets (Alam, 2007), there is evidence indicates a significant decline in its population (Ahmed et al., 2015). This species colonize and breed seasonally during rainy days and migrates back to permanent waters in the dry season (Rainboth, 1996). According to Friese (1980), this spawning activity may last about seven days. Eggs are laid in small clumps on submerged vegetation. A 21–25 cm female fish usually lays 1,200–3,000 eggs (Roberts, 1992).
