Description

Callicarpa maingayi is a plant that grows as shrubs up to 2.5 metres tall or as small trees up to 15 metres tall. According to Leeratiwong et al., (2009), the first species that was recorded in Malaysia by King & Gamble (1908) has a hairy ovary while in Thailand, the ovary species is glabrous. Within the petioles or leaf stalks about 2.5-8 cm long, it has elliptic to obovate laminas. Meanwhile, the cupular sepals of the flowers were 1-1.5 mm long and had four slight lobes with thickened ridges. The outer surface of the flower is obscured to some extent by an indumentum of interwoven branched hairs. Its petals can be purple or pale lilac (Bramley, 2022). Callicarpa maingayi is known for its oblong anthers and its short filaments that exceed the corolla tube or all parts of its flower petals (Leeratiwong et al., 2009). The fruits are green or will become red-purple in colour when they ripen.

It is known to be distributed in southernmost Thailand and in Peninsular Malaysia except for Perlis, Penang, and Johor states. It can be found in the forest areas like primary or secondary lowland forests, or in the roadsides, and sometimes up to 1,225 m in hill forests. Regarding its conservation status, this common species is in the Least Concern category (Bramley, 2022).
