Description

Syncrossus hymenophysa, commonly known as "Lali Palembang", is a member of the Botiidae family. It is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. This species inhabits lowland and marshy regions such as lakes, rivers, and streams, typically near submerged trees or beneath floating logs. It is also can be found in upland streams with stony substrates. This explains why Lali Palembang can breed in small streams in swamp forests and reproduce using an egg depositor. Egg depositing involves external fertilisation, in which females deposit eggs on substrate or vegetation, where males will then fertilise. This species attracts aquarium enthusiasts due to its distinctive colours and lively behaviour. This Lali Palembang exhibits gregarious behaviour by congregating in schools. Syncrossus hymenophysa is an omnivorous fish that feeds on worms, crustaceans, seaweeds and algae. This fish has a distinct pattern of dark spots resembling leopard's fur. The body of this species is greyish, with 12–15 greenish vertical bars on each flank. A bifid spine is present in front of the eye, and the mouth is equipped with two rostral barbels. This fish can grow as long as 210 mm (Mills et al., 1989). The IUCN Red List has listed Syncrossus hymenophysa as the Least Concern species (Ahmad, 2019).
