Description

Drepananthus magnificus is a tree that can grow up to 20 m tall. The genus name drepananthus is derived from the Greek words drepanos means falcate or sickle-shaped, and anthos which denotes to flowers. The combination of this two terms describing the sickle-shaped flower petals of this genus. While magnificus is a Latin term means magnificent. The twigs are smooth and have uniform dense short brown tomentum. The texture of the leaves are chartaceous to sub-coriaceous with blade shapes either oblong-ovate or oblong-obovate ranging from 13–45 m long and 6–17 cm wide. The upper surface of the leaves are glabrous and have short hairs on the midribs and lateral veins, while the underneath leaves are hairy, with dense tufts hairs. The midrib on above is a little bit immersed, but the beneath is prominent and when dried, both sides of leaves are turning brown. It has cream or yellow flowers with petal blades measuring up to 8.5 cm long, 3–4 mm wide for outer petals, and 2–3 mm wide for inner petals. It produces up to 5 globose and beaked monocarps with size approximately 3 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter, while each monocarp contains up to 5 flat seeds. According to records from Turner et al. (2014), this species is native to Borneo, where it can be found in lowland to lower montane forests at altitude up to 1,250 m in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan.
