Description

Magnolia macklottii is named after H.C. Macklott who is a medical doctor, anatomist and zoologist in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). This species is known to have two varieties in which M. m. var. beccariana is the only variety recorded in Peninsular Malaysia. It is most widespread and common in the lower montane forest up to 1,500 m (Nooteboom, 2012).

M. m. var. beccariana is a small tree that can grow up to 15 m tall with a columnar bole measuring about 35 cm in diameter. It has a small buttress and slightly cracked bark. The leaves are arranged spirally with petiole at 3–12 mm long. It has an elliptic to slightly obovate leaf with a short acuminate shape at the apex measuring 0.5–2 mm long acumen. This variety begins to flower at 2 m in height with fragrant flower varying from creamy white to pale orange consisting of 6 inner tepals and 3 outer tepals. The green, cylindrical shaped fruit did not have gynophore (elongated stalk which support the ovule–producing part of a flower) and the seeds are described with pink sarcotesta (fleshy seedcoat – a type of testa for a plant) (Nooteboom, 2012).
