Description

Like other pitcher plant species, Nepenthes macfarlanei is a climbing plant that can grow up to 3 m tall. It is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia and generally inhabiting ridges of the upper montane forest at 1,500-2,150 m altitude (Nooteboom, 2012).

The pitchers are usually pale green with white or cream on the upper half and mottled with red. It can also appear in purplish red throughout with darker blotches. Its lower pitchers are ovoid or broadly cylindrical and slightly ventricose (swollen in one side) in shape with measurements 13-15 cm long and 6-8 cm wide. The lower pitchers have a pair of fringed wings including ovate mouth and suborbicular lid where the lower surface is densely covered in white hairs and packed with numerous round to elliptic, crater-like nectar gland. The upper pitchers are similar in most aspects of their lower parts but with slightly infundibulate (funnel-shaped) and abruptly contracted below the peristome (Nooteboom, 2012).
