Description

Dryobalanops oblongifolia, commonly known as the oblong-leaved kapur or oblong-leaved ironwood, is a species of tree in the Dipterocarpaceae family (Chudnoff, 1984). It is normally known locally as keladan. It is native to the island of Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia and where it grows in lowland and hill dipterocarp forests (Whitmore, 1998). The tree can reach heights of up to 50 meters (Chudnoff, 1984) and has a straight, cylindrical trunk with flaky, dark yellowish-brown bark (Whitmore, 1998).

The leaves of Dryobalanops oblongifolia are alternate and oblong in shape, with a glossy green color and a smooth, leathery texture (Chudnoff, 1984). They are typically about 6-20 cm long and 4.5-5 cm wide (Whitmore, 1998). The flowers of the tree are small, white and glabrous with yellow anthers and are followed by small, winged, round fruit containing seeds (Chudnoff, 1984).
