Description

Goniothalamus bracteosus is a treelet or small tree that grows in the montane forest. It can be found only in Mount Kinabalu, Sabah at altitudes between 900 m to 1,500 m a.s.l. The younger twigs are typically brown and glabrous. On the other hand, the dried twigs are often pale, quite corky, and have thin wrinkles along their length. The leaves have chartaceous texture and can be varying from ovate, elliptic, lanceolate, or obovate. The blade size ranges from 10–21 cm long and 4–7 cm wide. The midrib on the upper surface is a little bit immersed, while the bottom midrib is prominent with a rounded edge. The dried leaves are green-brown on the upper surface and medium to pale brown on the bottom. The yellow outer petals possess a leathery texture, and ovate-lanceolate shape, measuring about 3.5–4.0 cm long and 1 cm wide. On the other hand, the inner petals are elliptic in shape, measuring around 8 mm long and 7 mm wide. This species can produce more than 15 ellipsoidal monocarps with beaks measuring about 15 mm long and 7 mm wide. The ripe monocarp is red and will turn dark brown when dried.  Each monocarp contains one seed.
