Description

Swietenia macrophylla, also known as the bigleaf mahogany or Honduran mahogany, is a tree species in the Meliaceae family (Chudnoff, 1980). It is native to Central and South America, where it grows in lowland rainforests and other moist, humid environments (FAO, 2018). The tree can reach heights of up to 50 meters (Chudnoff, 1980) and has a straight, cylindrical trunk with rough, dark brown bark (FAO, 2018).

The leaves of Swietenia macrophylla are large and glossy, with a deep green color and a leathery texture (Chudnoff, 1980). They are arranged alternately on the branches and are typically about 20-30 cm long (FAO, 2018). The flowers of the tree are small and green, and are followed by oval-shaped fruit containing seeds (Chudnoff, 1980).
