Description

Lagerstroemia calyculata Kurz is a deciduous tree with pretty pale purple flowers and grows in forest margins by the side of the main road. In 2015, this tree is the first record for Malaysia. Previously, this species is known from Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and east to Vietnam.

The bole of this tree is straight and fluted at the base. The structure of the bud surface without ridges distinguishes L. calyculata from the other species. The fruiting calyx is broadly cup-shaped, with about 6 mm long and 6 mm in diameter, appresed to the fruit. The flowering time is during the month of May. In Thailand, where tree can reach a tall size, the trunks become hollow with age and are said to be used by nesting hornbills (de Wilde et al., 2014).
