Description

Xylocarpus moluccensis is known as Nyireh batu in Malay and Nyireh-peti in Sarawak by the Iban indigenous people. The genus moluccensis is derived from the word Moluccas, a province in Indonesia (Soepadmo et al., 2007).

The wood, which resembles much like mahogany and has a fine finish, is used by the Mah Meri indigenous group in Carey island, Selangor, to carve their traditional masks and images that are used to communicate with spirits (Kiew et al., 2013).

Xylocarpus moluccensis is commonly found in the drier upper reaches of mangrove swamps, often in only slightly brackish water. X. moluccensis was widely confused with X. granatum, until Beccari, the Italian naturalist, made a first clear distinction between the two species (Kiew et al., 2013).
