Description

Balanophora reflexa is a dioecious plant, where the male and female inflorescences occur on different individuals. This plant belongs to the family Balanophoraceae. The tubers branching from the base and can be seen several together in a stout mass. Normally, the number of scale leaves is three to eight and they are spirally arranged. The pedicels of the male flowers are measured around 10-20 mm long, becoming reflexed at anthesis. The ovary of the female flowers is measured around 0.27 mm long, while the style is measured around 0.9 mm long.

Balanophora derived from two Greek words, balanos, meaning acorn and –phora, meaning bearing, which is referring to inflorescence. Meanwhile, the species epithet derived a Latin word, reflexus meaning bent backwards at more than 90o and this refers to the pedicels of the male flowers.

This plant is distributed in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo (Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan). It occurs in lowland to montane forests, from 30-100 m a.s.l. in Peninsular Malaysia and 300-3,000 m a.s.l. in Borneo. One interesting fact about this flower on Mt. Kinabalu is the strong smell it produces, like the smell of fox or mice (Kiew, 1978). The conservation status of this plant in Peninsular Malaysia is Critically Endangered due to the land-use change in two known localities, where the forest has been converted to oil palm plantation, logged or clear-felled (Kiew, 2010).
