Description

Castanopsis pedunculata is usually known as berangan in (Iban, Malay). This tree grows up to 25 m tall and 40 cm in diameter. Its buttresses can reach 2 m in height. The brownish bark is either flaky or lenticellate. The shape of the leaves can vary from elliptic to oblong and glabrous (smooth) on both surfaces. The inflorescences and flowers of this species are unknown. There are three ovoid seeds in each obovoid cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Castanopsis pedunculata is endemic to Borneo (except Brunei and Kalimantan). In Sabah, the type specimen from Ulu Mendalong in Sipitang district has been recorded, while in Sarawak, this tree species is collected from Similajau Forest Reserve in Bintulu district (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
