Description

Gloriosa superba is commonly known as flame lily. It is a tuberous herb growing up to 4 m long. It is widespread in tropical and southern Africa and in tropical Asia. Gloriosa means full of glory while superb means superb, which refer to the striking red and yellow flowers. The leaf blade has strong, parallel nerves and ends in a tendril-like spiral. The crisply waved margins can be seen on the red and yellow flowers. The fruit is a large, oblong capsule. All part of the plant especially the tubers cannot be eaten as they are extremely poisonous. Fatality may happen if no precaution taken during eating.  However, it has been used effectively to treat acute gout, intestinal worms, infertility, wounds and other skin problems. Gloriosa superb is widely cultivated as ornamental plants (Kew Royal Botanic Garden). As it is common and widespread in natural range, it is assessed by IUCN Red List as Least Concern. In spite of that, there is over collection in India for its medicinal properties. Monitoring should be done to prevent them from extinction. Although the species decline locally in India , it remains as widespread and common (IUCN, 2013).
