Description

Ancistrocladus tectorius is a woody liana which belongs to the family Ancistrocladaceae. It is locally known as akar jejulong. This woody liana is bushy at first, and it climbs by using woody hooks. The stems are dark brown and can grow up to 4 m tall with up to 7 cm in diameter. The lamina of the leaves is thinly coriaceous, while the margin of the leaves is entire. The flowers are small with deep purple-pink petals. The archene or the dry one-seeded fruit is measured approximately 5 x 3 mm, with pinkish wings that turned brown when dry.

The genus is derived from two Greek words, ancistron means fish hook, and cladus mean branch, which is referring to the climbing hooks. The species epithet is derived from the Latin word, tectorius which means covered.

This species is distributed in Myanmar, South China, Vietnam, Thailand, South Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. It occurs in primary and secondary lowland to hill dipterocarp forest at 50-1,180 m a.s.l. and swamp forest. The flowering and fruiting season begins from February to November (Siti-Munirah, 2010).
