Description
Drepananthus ridleyi is a tree that can grow up to 25 m tall. The genus name drepananthus is derived from the Greek words drepanos means falcate or sickle-shaped, and anthos which denotes to flowers. The combination of these two terms describes the sickle-shaped flower petals of this genus. The twigs are coated with dark brown hairs that will fall off with age. The leaves are ovate to ovate-lanceolate in shape and range in size from 7.5–21.5 cm long and 4–11.5 cm wide. The yellowish-green flower petals resemble coarse strands of hair, with the outer petals measuring up to 70 mm long and 1–2 mm wide and coated with very dense, short pale tomentum. It has approximately 10 cylindrical monocarps with sizes up to 2.5 cm long and 1 cm in diameter, while each monocarp contains about two to five smooth and lenticular seeds. The dried seed will turn red-brown, and approximately 10 mm long, 8 mm wide, and 4 mm thick. According to Turner et al. (2014), this species grows in heath and peat swamp forests, where it has been found in several locations such as Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Brunei.
